THE
HERMETIC PRINCIPLES

The Principles of Truth are Seven; he who knows these, understandingly, possesses the Magic Key before whose touch all the Doors of the Temple fly open.

~THE KYBALION

Uncovering the Secret Laws of Nature

First recorded in a concise text known as The Kybalion (1908), the Seven Hermetic Principles are said to reflect ancient philosophical teachings attributed to the legendary figure Hermes Trismegistus—a cultural bridge between the Egyptian god Thoth and the Greek Hermes. Whether drawn from oral tradition or symbolic synthesis, these principles have endured not for their mysticism, but for their striking psychological and philosophical insight into how reality functions.

The seven principles are: Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender. Though metaphysical in origin, each offers a lens through which to examine the patterns of both the natural world and human experience. In recent years, many of these ideas have been echoed—often unknowingly—in systems theory, quantum models, and consciousness studies.

While all seven principles inform the philosophical architecture of the Spireon, a few play a particularly central role—namely Polarity, Gender, and Rhythm. These will be explored further below, as they offer foundational insight into how opposites interact, how creation unfolds through dynamic tension, and how consciousness develops in rhythmic waves rather than linear ascent.

Far from being a belief system, Hermeticism offers a set of interpretive tools—an early attempt to understand the invisible architecture beneath visible reality. In that spirit, the Spireon incorporates these insights not as dogma, but as conceptual bridges between ancient wisdom and modern models of consciousness.

Those most relevant to the Spireon will be enumerated below.

The Law of
RHYTHM

Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.

The Principle of Rhythm states that all phenomena move in measurable cycles—ebbing and flowing like tides, advancing and retreating in patterned motion. This is not simply poetic metaphor; it reflects a structural truth observable in planetary orbits, biological systems, emotional states, and the rise and fall of civilizations. In Hermetic thought, rhythm is not randomness but oscillation, a law of balance working behind the scenes.

Within the Spireon, Rhythm underlies the very architecture of consciousness. Individuals and societies oscillate between stages informed by the Masculine archetype followed by the Feminine, without exception, like a pendulum.  Beyond this, each progresses through epochs and realms in a pattern that is not strictly linear, but cyclical and spiraling. Movement into higher awareness is punctuated by reversions, regressions, or consolidations—what may appear as “backsliding” is often part of a greater wave pattern. Each chapter of growth carries its own rhythm of tension, breakthrough, and integration. To recognize Rhythm is to accept that expansion and contraction are both vital to transformation.

Growth occurs, like sound waves, in fractal wave patterns—waves within waves within waves, nested one in the next, continuously—even infinitely at ever increasing scales.

The Law of
POLARITY

Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled

The Principle of Polarity teaches that all truths are partial and that every condition exists along a spectrum with its complementary opposite. Light and dark, hot and cold, activity and stillness—each is not an absolute, but a continuum, defined by contrast. What appears contradictory is, in many cases, simply two expressions of the same force viewed from opposite angles.

Polarity is essential to the Spireon’s foundational architecture. The entire system rests upon the tension between opposites: logic and intuition, self and other, inner and outer. Every epoch embodies a kind of polarity in worldview and identity, and each realm explores the reconciliation of competing forces—survival and meaning, structure and transcendence, unity and individuation. By integrating polarity rather than resisting it, one begins to access the higher synthesis that propels consciousness forward. Progress is not in choosing a side, but in perceiving the totality.

The same polarity of the male and female principle exists in nature; not only, as is obvious in animals and plants, but in the polarity of the two fundamental functions, that of receiving and penetrating.  It is the polarity of earth and rain, of the river and the ocean, of the night and day, of darkness and light, of matter and spirit.

Rest

To demonstrate these two principles at work in one's daily life: note the oscillation of two complementary principles—ever flowing, in an infinite loop.  The Pendulum swings without cessation.

A person rests, and how wonderful it seems to be at first, until, inevitably, it becomes burdensome—even wearying, and the urge arises within them to get up and move—to be active.

This new activity feels invigorating, and yet, at some point, it begins to feel draining, and the natural response is to sit down, to relax, to rest.  And then the whole cycle begins again.  This is the Principle of Polarity being set into motion by the Principle of Rhythm.

The Law of
CORRESPONDENCE

As above, so below; as below, so above.  As within, so without; as without, so within.

"As above, so below; as within, so without.” This is the Principle of Correspondence—the idea that patterns repeat across levels of scale. What is true at one level of reality reflects truths found elsewhere: the spiral of a galaxy mirrors the spiral of a seashell; the structure of myth reflects the psyche of the individual. Consciousness, form, and energy are fractal in nature.

The Spireon adopts this principle as a navigational key. The microcosm of the individual mirrors the macrocosm of civilization, and the journey through the epochs of development echoes both ancestral myth and future potential. Recognizing correspondence enables deeper self-inquiry, for to study the outer is to glimpse the inner—and vice versa. The spiral that shapes history is the same that shapes the soul.

The Law of
GENDER

Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes.

Blog-Seed-Inoculation-1200x565.jpg

In Hermetic philosophy, Gender is a universal principle—not limited to biological sex, but present in all planes of existence. It refers to the generative tension between active and receptive, projective and integrative forces. The sun and moon, day and night, seed and soil—each manifests an energetic signature that, together, gives rise to creation.

In the Spireon, Gender serves as the cosmic polarity from which the elemental structure emerges. The epochs and chapters are themselves born of layered gendered dualities: action and reflection, expansion and consolidation, wisdom and love. The human expression of gender is only one manifestation of this universal engine. To understand this principle is not to reinforce social roles, but to see that creation itself arises from the dynamic interplay of masculine and feminine principles within and beyond us.

This Principle is directly related to The Two.
